Week in Review for Duncan (wk 1a of 36) and a Little News about Grayson

This is the week for my 8yo, Duncan, and a small brag for my 17yo, Grayson.

We are beginning to ramp up into fall schoolwork. Next week we will begin more materials and I hope to add the hours from this week and next week together to count as 5 full days. Our first full day is scheduled for 8/8. Then we will have a whole month to find our groove before activities begin in September. The goal is to be able to complete 90 days by Friday, December 16th and still take off Labor Day, a Wednesday- Friday in October, Halloween Day, and the entire week of Thanksgiving.

T4L Page

This week Duncan began using Time4Learning. He completed at least one activity each day in Language Arts, Language Arts Extensions, Science, and Social Studies. He completed at least two activities each day in T4L Math. Here is a breakdown of how much time (hours: minutes: seconds) he ended up spending on T4L this week:

LA and LA extensions, combined- 1:54:27
Math- 0:44:58
Science- 1:36:01
Social Studies- 1:19:05

As you can see this is a whopping total of just slightly over five and a half hours. I am viewing it as test prep for third grade standardized testing. I hope that after we start Classical Conversations this fall that there will still be enough time in the day to squeeze in T4L.

This week in math outside of Time4Learning Duncan spent between 20 and 30 minutes each day working on Kumon math. The little man also spent a whole whopping 29 minutes on Khan Academy for an average of less than 6 minutes each day. :-/

He read Encyclopedia Brown #3 and Landmark Books The Vikings by Elizabeth Janeway. This week he began looking at Vikings in T4L, so this book seemed the obvious one to grab at the library.

He also practiced violin about 15 minutes each day and I am so proud of myself for managing to get that done.

Proud momma brag on my 17yo: Grayson finished his very first course at the community college. He took United States History 2 in the second short summer session and made an A!

Summer Is Flying By... Can I Make It Fly Faster

Duncan is 8yo and will be beginning 3rd grade in the fall. Grayson is 17yo and will be a senior this year. Christian is 20yo, home from college and hanging out with us.

I dislike summer greatly. I dislike any temperature above the low 80s. Don't get me started on how I feel about humidity. The short response is that I dislike feeling out of breath from trying to breathe liquid air. Of course, I can't forget the joys of grass pollen. I don't sleep well and I'm grouchy. So, there!

Back to the regularly scheduled program.

No school Monday as we were celebrating July 4th. We barely made it to our local fireworks. When we arrived, there was no music! Arghh, this happened last time we went to the local fireworks and I had just forgotten! Next year I will remember to bring my own i-pod full of patriotic tunes.

This week Duncan read The Chalkbox Kid, Help! I'm a Prisoner in the Library, and Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. These are on the 3rd-4th grade Kumon reading lists. Our Kumon center is doing a raffle for reading program this summer and thanks to the immediacy of receiving a raffle ticket Duncan is motivated to read.

Even with taking off for several weeks, the little guy is rolling along in Kumon math. He may actually finish this level before we start back to school.

Last week was Duncan's last lesson with our violin teacher, Aaron. He moved back to his home town and will be sorely missed. Last week we also started with our new violin teacher, Jessica. We will see how it goes. Aaron will be a difficult act to follow.

Duncan also watched a couple of science videos from the library.

In the last week of June, Grayson began a 5 week summer session American History 2 class at the local community college. So, while cramming a semester into 5 weeks, he is pretty much just doing American History. I wouldn't have considered it a good idea to take a short summer session class, but my oldest had this professor and absolutely loved her. When I saw that she was the instructor, I was all for it. This week he made a 94 on his first test. Some smarty britches made a 99. The class received a 1 point curve, so his finally score was 95. He was satisfied. Monday he has a paper due and there is another test next week. Whew, those short sessions are crazy fast.

Friday- Couple of Weeks in Review

Well, let's see. Friday 10/8 I was on the road and Friday 10/15 I was on the road, so those updates have come and gone. However, we took fall break from 10/11-10/15. Here is a quick photo overview from then until now. We had a visit from our college freshman, two birthdays, and won a volleyball tournament! This has required a drive to Memphis and back and forth from middle TN to eastern KY twice in addition to all the driving here in middle TN.

As a general overview, we are plugging along in LA and math. We didn't do any new science this week and we studied Jesus in history.

Friday- Week in Review for Grayson

Honestly, I haven't looked through Grayson's work. He says that he has completed his literature, history, chemistry, and art. I know he went to his economics group, his math tutor, and his IEW class. And I know his volleyball team is still undefeated!

I also know that he spent tonight sitting in  bed reading fan fiction on his laptop.

He completed his homework in IEW, Mother Tongue, and reviewed puctuation rules in The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation.

Precalculus
On Wednesday he went to the math tutor. This week he is finishing up Sullivan’s Precalculus Chapter 2: Linear Functions and Models.

Chemistry
He began chapter 4 and all is well.

History
This week in Glencoe high school World History Grayson read about Southeast Asia.

He also watched lecture 14 from The Teaching Company’s A History of England from the Tudors to the Stuarts. Lecture 14 covers Edward VI. Grayson filled on a TRISMS Famous People sheet for him.

Economics
On Tuesday he attended his one semester economics class using ABeka.

Arts
Grayson watched lecture 9 from The Teaching Company’s The Art of the Northern Renaissance.

Volleyball
Grayson’s fourth game was last night. They won again, but I didn’t’ stay to watch, so I can’t comment on the actual game.

He wrapped up Chemistry chapter3. Woohoo.

History
This week in Glencoe high school World History Grayson read about Africa.

He also watched lecture 13 from The Teaching Company’s A History of England from the Tudors to the Stuarts. Lecture 13 wraps up the personal life of Henry VIII. Grayson filled on a TRISMS Famous People sheet on Henry VIII.

Economics
On Tuesday he attended his one semester economics class using ABeka. He wore a NOM NOM NOM t-shirt where he used duct tape taped ECO over the first NOM and ICS over the last NOM. I was amused.

Arts
Grayson watched lecture 8 from The Teaching Company’s The Art of the Northern Renaissance.

Volleyball
Grayson’s third game was this week. Again they won, so they are undefeated.

Grayson, Weekly Review: 9/6-9/10

Language Arts
Grayson read selections from EMC’s World Lit. This week he read a selection from “Of Cannibals” by Michel de Montaigne.

He completed his homework in IEW, Mother Tongue, and reviewed comma rules in The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation.

Precalculus
On Wednesday he went to the math tutor. He is using a Sullivan Precalculus text. Yesterday (9/12) we bought him his own graphing calculator. He had been using Christian’s, but Christian took his to college. Imagine that.

Chemistry
Alright, things are better. He read RS4K Level2 Chemistry 1.1-1.2 and chapter 3 in his Prentice Hall text and there was no problem!

History
This week in Glencoe high school World History Grayson read about Africa.

He also watched lectures 11 and 12 from The Teaching Company’s A History of England from the Tudors to the Stuarts. This completes part 1 of the 4 part series and covered the break with the Catholic church and the power of the monarchy through the end of Henry VIII’s reign.

Economics
On Tuesday he attended his one semester economics class using ABeka and he made a B on his test. This is wonderful since we were running so late that not only didn’t he have time to shower but he also didn’t eat lunch. When Grayson is rushed like this, it is not uncommon for him not to do well.

Arts
Grayson watched lecture 7 from The Teaching Company’s The Art of the Northern Renaissance.

Volleyball
Grayson’s second game was this week. They played two 25 point games and one 15 point game and won all three. In the final game, the first 11 points were while Grayson was serving!

On Wednesday he went to the math tutor. He is using a Sullivan Precalculus text. He is almost finished with Chapter 1 Equations, Inequalities, and Functions.

Chemistry
Well, he finally finished Chapter 2. Aarrgh, Chemistry is my nemesis!

History
This week in Glencoe high school World History Grayson read about exploration and expansion.

He also watched lectures 8 through 10 from The Teaching Company’s A History of England from the Tudors to the Stuarts. The final lecture dealt with Henry the VIII divorce from Catherine of Aragon and his split from the Catholic church- exciting stuff!

Economics
This Tuesday he attended his one semester economics class using ABeka

Arts
Grayson watched lecture 6 from The Teaching Company’s The Art of the Northern Renaissance.

Volleyball
Grayson’s first game was last night. Grayson's serves were consistent and definitely helped win the game!

Friday- Week in Review for Grayson

Grayson read selections from EMC’s World Lit, completed his homework for comp class using IEW and Mother Tongue, and worked a little in Queen’s Language Lessons.

Precalculus
On Wednesday he went to the math tutor. He is using a Sullivan Precalculus text. He also discussed Chemistry with the math tutor, because he was stuck squatting on a section.

Chemistry
Actually, an online friend ended up helping him figure out what he needed to know. Today, we will be trying to move forward in the text.

History
This week Grayson read chapter 12 section 5 in the Glencoe high school World History by Spielvogel and completed this section in the Active Reading Notetaking Guide workbook.

He also watched lectures 6 and 7 from The Teaching Company’s A History of England from the Tudors to the Stuarts. I have not watched any of these lectures, but Grayson likes the professor. He says that he is very enthusiastic. He bounces around a lot, but after the first couple of lectures the camera man figured out to keep a wide frame, so that the camera doesn’t need to move around so much.

Economics
This Tuesday he attended his one semester economics class using ABeka. It is a fun group of high schoolers. This week one of the young men brought some little magnets to keep his hands busy while he studied, but apparently the fun little things were far too entertaining and the group played with magnets while they studied. The group leader asked these not come to class anymore.

Arts
Grayson watched lecture 4 and 5 from The Teaching Company’s The Art of the Northern Renaissance. The professor is a character- she is a little stiff and moves her mouth much more than her jaws when she talks. Something about her reminds me of Sister Wendy. Maybe it is that she comes across as being knowledgeable and reserved. She isn’t as opinionated in these lectures as Sister Wendy, but you get the feeling that she could be if this were a different format. I like the choices of lecture topics and the material presented, but that is something I knew from reading the information on The Teaching Company website.

Volleyball
Grayson began volleyball last night. It is co-ed, but there is only one other guy on his team. The funny thing is that there also only one other guy in his IEW composition class!

Algebra 2
On Tuesday he went to the math tutor and spent the rest of the week doing Teaching Textbooks Lessons. Since Tuesday, he has reviewed 94 which they will wrap up next week and has begun working on 95-98 that are due next Tuesday.

Forensics
This week Grayson read pp.1-10 in The Forensic Casebook and perused a forensics website. He also did lesson 1-7 in Crime Scene Investigations. He watched a lecture from The Teaching Company’s- Understanding the Human Body.

Physics
Grayson began Conceptual Physics Chapter 21 and watched the fifth lecture from The Teaching Company’s Physics in Your Life.

History
This week in TRISMS EOC Grayson began researching the Early Middle Ages and the Vikings. He a completed some vocabulary, filled in a civilization questionnaire on the Vikings and an Early Middle Ages worksheet, and completed some mapping.

He also read a lengthy excerpt from Beowulf.

Spanish
Grayson spent about 45 minutes each day working on SOS Spanish.

Arts
Grayson continued listening to Gregorian chants and looking at the works of Donatello. He also watched lecture 22 from The Teaching Company’s Great Artists of the Italian Renaissance.

Life Skills
Grayson is still moseying his way through Ourselves by Charlotte Mason. Ambleside uses this over a couple of years and I suspect that it will be taking Grayson that long as well.

Friday- Homeschool Week in Review for Grayson

Well, in addition to Duncan deciding he wants to go to school, Grayson is making me crazy spending way to much time playing online games!

Religious Studies
Grayson continued reading through The 100 Most Important Events in Christian History and Christian History Made Easy.

Language Arts
Grayson continued with The Lord of the Rings.

This week in Bullfinch’s Mythology King Arthur and His Knights Grayson finished chapters 8 and 9.

He continued using his online Grammar program.

Grayson finished Breaking Dawn. He also read a couple of Mouse Guard graphic novels- Mouse Guard: Fall 1152 and Mouse Guard: Winter 1152.

He also completed pp.13-18 in Jump-In.

Algebra 2
On Tuesday he went to the math tutor and spent the rest of the week doing Teaching Textbooks Lessons. Since Tuesday, he has reviewed 91 which they will wrap up next week and has begun working on 92-94 that are due next Tuesday.

Human Anatomy
This week for in Human Anatomy Grayson completed Body by Design Chapter 16 and watched 2 videos from the How Stuff Works Website. He also watched a lecture from The Teaching Company’s- Understanding the Human Body. This wraps up Grayson’s study of human anatomy. Although he will be watching the TC videos for the rest of the year, next week he begins forensics!

Physics
Grayson finished Conceptual Physics Chapter 20 and watched the fourth lecture from The Teaching Company’s Physics in Your Life.

History
This week in TRISMS EOC Grayson finished studying the Byzantine Empire. He a worksheet, some mapping, and an extra person of interest questionnaire on a Suleiman the Magnificent.

Spanish
Grayson spent about 45 minutes each day working on SOS Spanish.

Arts
Grayson began listening to Gregorian chants and looking at the works of Donatello. As part of TRISMS EOC, he looked online at information and in books at the mosaics of the Hagia Sophia. He also watched lecture 22 from The Teaching Company’s Great Artists of the Italian Renaissance.

Life Skills
Grayson continued moseying his way through Ourselves by Charlotte Mason. He did some ACT English practice questions.

Friday- Homeschool Week in Review for Grayson

Poor Grayson- he will be doing schoolwork tomorrow on Saturday. Since I went to Christian’s tutorial Monday morning and had to be at work at 3:30 Monday afternoon, we decided that his week would need to run from Tuesday to Saturday. However, Saturday will primarily be discussion and science, so it’s not too bad.

Religious Studies
Grayson continued reading through The 100 Most Important Events in Christian History and Christian History Made Easy.

Language Arts
Grayson continued with The Lord of the Rings.

This week in Bullfinch’s Mythology King Arthur and His Knights Grayson finished chapters 6, 7, and is reading 8.

He continued studying clauses in his online Grammar program.

Grayson finished Eclipse and is quickly finishing Breaking Dawn.

Algebra 2
On Tuesday he went to the math tutor and spent the rest of the week doing Teaching Textbooks Lessons 87-89. He needs to finish 90 and 91 by Tuesday afternoon.

Human Anatomy
This week for in Human Anatomy Grayson completed Body by Design Chapter 15 and watched 2 videos from the How Stuff Works Website. He also watched a lecture from The Teaching Company’s- Understanding the Human Body.

Physics
Grayson began Conceptual Physics Chapter 20 and watched the third lecture from The Teaching Company’s Physics in Your Life. He will be looking at more physics tomorrow.

History
This week in TRISMS EOC Grayson began studying the early Byzantium. He completed some vocabulary, a worksheet about the Byzantine civilization, and the vocabulary quiz.

In TRISMS EOC’s language arts component Grayson researched Corpus Juris Civilis (Justinian’s code) and wrote a tribute to Justinian for inscription on the base of a statue. He also researched Constantine and filled out a questionnaire about him.

Spanish
Grayson spent about 45 minutes each day working on SOS Spanish.

Arts
Grayson wrapped up our final week of listening to the music of Hildegard von Bingen and looking at the works of Masaccio. As part of TRISMS EOC, he looked online at information and in books at the Hagia Sophia. He also watched lectures 20 and 21 from The Teaching Company’s Great Artists of the Italian Renaissance.

Life Skills
Grayson continued moseying his way through Ourselves by Charlotte Mason. He did some ACT English practice questions.

Friday- Homeschool Week in Review for Grayson

Yes, this is Grayson with the workboxes. I asked him to go put up a book so that I could take a photo that had a size reference. This is what my goofy child did.


(For reference, Grayson is about 5’7” if he would bother to stand straight.)

So, the top 12 drawers belong to Grayson and the bottom 12 belong to Duncan. On Grayson’s drawers two have two numbers for a total of 14 things to do. Although they are Velcro, Grayson never removes his numbers. Oh, and the numbers do not represent a schedule. I don’t really care in what order they complete their drawers.



Duncan likes to move his numbers to his completed vine to the right of the boxes.


Alright, we’ve had a bunch of little things to do this week that required leaving the house. This meant that not quite as much was accomplished as last week, but it also meant that Grayson has had plenty of car time that he used to read the Twilight books.

Religious Studies
Grayson continued reading through The 100 Most Important Events in Christian History and Christian History Made Easy.

Language Arts
Grayson continued with Literary Lessons from The Lord of the Rings. Grayson fills in the student pages, but we discuss the information rather than using the writing assignments.

This week in Bullfinch’s Mythology King Arthur and His Knights Grayson finished chapters 4 and 5.

He began studying clauses in his online Grammar program.

Grayson finished Twilight last weekend and New Moon this week. He just began Eclipse on Thursday.

This week Grayson informed me that he just can’t write. In this regard, he is exhausting. Putting thoughts on paper comes naturally to me and my oldest, so perhaps he is intimidated, because both Christian and I actually enjoy writing. Anyway, we are stepping way back and taking a different approach. This week I ordered Apologia’s Jump-In! and we began looking through the free chapter that is on their website.

Algebra 2
On Tuesday he went to the math tutor and spent the rest of the week doing review problems for a quiz that the tutor plans to give him next week.

Human Anatomy
This week for in Human Anatomy Grayson completed Body by Design Chapter 14. We skimmed the DK's The Human Body Book section on reproductive systems. (We already covered most of this section with Abeka’s health last year.) He also watched 2 videos from the How Stuff Works Website and a lecture from The Teaching Company’s- Understanding the Human Body.

Physics
Grayson completed Conceptual Physics Chapter 19 and watched the second lecture from The Teaching Company’s Physics in Your Life.

History
This week in TRISMS EOC Grayson continued studying the early Christians. He completed some vocabulary, a worksheet about the early Christian church prior to the fall of Rome, and the vocabulary quiz. Today he will take a quiz over this week and last week.

In TRISMS EOC’s language arts component Grayson read selections from Augustine’s City of God and discussed them with me.

Spanish
Grayson spent about 45 minutes each day working on SOS Spanish.

Arts
Grayson continued listening to the music of Hildegard von Bingen and looking at the works of Masaccio. As part of TRISMS EOC, he looked online at information about Old St. Peter’s Basilica. He also watched lectures 18 and 19 from The Teaching Company’s Great Artists of the Italian Renaissance.

Life Skills
Grayson continued moseying his way through Ourselves by Charlotte Mason.

Friday- Homeschool Week in Review for Grayson

Someone on a homeschool forum asked about how a Charlotte Mason week looks, so here is how Grayson's Charlotte Mason inspired schooling looks in action. This work is not completed by subject, but rather broken down into 14 workboxes of books. In other words, although here I have listed all of his language arts work together, it is actually scattered throughout his day.

Religious Studies
For a half a credit in Christian history Grayson is taking the year to slowly read through The 100 Most Important Events in Christian History and Christian History Made Easy. He is about halfway through both books.

Language Arts
Grayson is using Literary Lessons from The Lord of the Rings. He is into book2, but this week I went back and did the first two unit studies with him. The first unit study is about Tolkien’s life and the second is about linguistics. We just read through and discussed the information.

Grayson is also reading Bullfinch’s Mythology King Arthur and His Knights. This week he started story 4- Arthur. He will be reading King Arthur and His Knights all semester.

He is doing a free online English Grammar program.

This week he also began Twilight and is about half finished.

Algebra 2
Grayson didn’t do math on Monday, because he goes to the math tutor on Tuesday and had no work left to finish. On Tuesday he went to the math tutor and Wednesday through Friday he completed lessons 84-86 in TT Algebra 2.

Human Anatomy
This week for in Human Anatomy Grayson completed Body by Design Chapter 13 and DK's The Human Body Book pp.170-199. He also watched 4 videos from the How Stuff Works Website and lecture 14 from The Teaching Company’s Understanding the Human Body.

Physics
Grayson completed Conceptual Physics Chapter 18 and watched the first lecture from The Teaching Company’s Physics in Your Life.

History
This week in TRISMS EOC Grayson studied the Celts and the early Christians. He completed the vocabulary, completed a civilization questionnaire on the Celts, did map work, and today did the vocabulary quiz.

TRISMS EOC has a language arts component that I count as part of history. This week Grayson read a brief explanation about Celtic oral literary tradition. Then, he read an excerpt from The Colloquy of Two Sages- the portion about the genealogy of memory. He read a children’s book on St.Patrick and did further research online to write a human interest news paragraph about him. He watched an online History Channel video on Boudicca and did further research to write a short research report. Today he has read information online about St. Augustine of Hippo. He will also be reading the excerpt from Confessions describing Augustine’s conversion and reading Acts 9:1-9 describing Paul’s conversion. Then, he will be completing some short answer questions about Augustine. He will also be comparing the conversions of Augustine and Paul.

Spanish
There isn’t much to say. Grayson is using SOS Spanish and I stay out of it.

Arts
Grayson has listened to the music of Hildegard von Bingen and looked at the works of Masaccio. As part of TRISMS EOC, he looked online at images of The Good Shepherd from the Catacombs. He also watched lecture 17 from The Teaching Company’s Great Artists of the Italian Renaissance.

Life Skills
This is credit that I put on Christian’s transcript this year and likewise will put on Grayson’s his senior year. It consists of the usual things like learning to boil eggs and change a tire, but it also consists of books read that encourage personal growth. For example Christian read The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens and The Teenage Liberation Handbook.

Currently, Grayson is moseying his way through Ourselves by Charlotte Mason and doing some ACT prep.

Friday- Homeschool Overview of Grayson

GRAYSON- 10th grade

Grayson goes to a tutor for math, uses SOS for Spanish, and is continuing Conceptual Physics. Everything else is more Charlotte Mason inspired.
